Five snaps into the NFL opener, Sam Darnold was already walking painfully toward the locker room. Dre’Mont Jones of the Patriots drove him into the turf on third-and-6, and the hip injury that followed sent sportsbooks reaching for refund programs while traders on event-contract venues ran into a different rulebook. The sack and landing are still circulating in medical breakdowns.
DraftKings moved while the game was live. Its support account said the quarterback had been ruled out and that Early Exit protection would honor qualifying tickets, including live wagers. Books can issue those credits because they take the other side of every ticket. Matching trade venues like Kalshi cannot.
Event market traders holding player-stat contracts asked for voids, but it’s simply not possible without penalizing the opposing trader.
Licensed books have turned injury frustration into a customer protection feature. DraftKings still explains its first-half Early Exit credit on a network explainer. Other operators rolled out similar September coverage for losing NFL props. Those credits are for customer service, ultimately for product marketing. The operator decides how generous to be in issuing these credits, since it goes against their books and no other party is involved.
Event contracts work without a house. Buyers and sellers meet on a CFTC-designated venue. The matching engine does not take inventory, even when an affiliated desk such as Kalshi Trading stands on one side of a print. Kalshi has described that wall in “Who am I trading against on Kalshi?” Asking the venue to void a live contract is like asking a stock exchange to cancel a fill because an unexpected event caused a stock’s value to drop. Somebody already purchased your order, essentially. The deal is done.
Kalshi’s Player-Stat Rules Leave Almost No Escape Hatch
The contract language is blunt. Kalshi’s football entity-stat rules say that once a player has taken part in at least one play, the contract settles on the actual statistics “despite any in-game injury, ejection, or other removal from the game.” That clause is in the public FOOTBALLENTITYSTAT certification. Darnold played. Those tickets were live. A trader can be upset by the unfolding of events; they can’t complain that clear, preset rules weren’t followed.
If a listed player never appears, the same document points to the last fair price the exchange set, not a void. Kalshi’s designated-contract-market rulebook also gives the venue “sole discretion to interpret a Contract’s Terms and Conditions.” The current public copy is the Kalshi DCM Rulebook. Sportsbooks rarely write themselves that much latitude because they grade house tickets, not pair two sides. Like most retail businesses, their refund/return/void policies only affect their own finances, and they set their own rules accordingly.
Prices Absorbed the Shock. Refunds Did Not.
On a peer-to-peer event market, the first move after an in-game injury is selling. Holders of “over” contracts dump inventory. Buyers of “under” contracts lift offers. The mid-market becomes the new forecast of a potentially truncated stat line. Once it’s announced officially that a player is not returning, those contracts, of course, become impossible to move, unless you have highly unaware traders.
Coach Macdonald described the hip as intact and pointed toward a possible return window around Week 3. Season-long passing yardage and performance contracts still have time to recover. One-game passing props do not. Of course, futures contracts can bounce when imaging comes back clean.
The opener for Seattle ended on a 13-10 win over the Patriots after backup Drew Lock finished the night at QB. The box score is official. Contracts tied to Darnold’s individual production will follow that box score, not any sympathy that followed the tackle and limp. Traders new to NFL event contracts should read the market rules well before the next star leaves on the first series and they feel cheated. The tape will keep moving. The settlement rule will not rewrite itself for a hip injury.
